About
The Karaoke Wrecking Crew was founded in 2006 to revive the old-school singing style you remember from back in the day. Just one man and one microphone against a roomful of hard eyes and icy hearts that only the ultimate entertainer can melt. NO DUETS (unless the song was originally recorded as a duet.) If you don’t have the guts to sing solo then you don’t belong in the big leagues. Stay home with grandma until you’re ready to bring it.
The Wrecking Crew means serious business. We will have a series of qualifying rounds before the final TOURNAMENT OF DEATH champion is crowned later in the year. And like Achilles at Troy, the victor will be well compensated by achieving the eternal glory that comes with greatness in battle.
Okay. Let’s SET IT OFF!
Re-posting my own karaoke rules, cross-posted from Gotham Girls Roller Derby:
1) No singing with hands in your pockets. *
2) NO “SUMMER LOVIN’”
3) The number of people karaoke-ing a song together should not exceed the number of people who sang it in the ‘original’.
In other words, if it’s originally arranged as a duet, make it a duet.
But if it’s originally sung by Davy Jones, then Cindy, Jan, Marsha, Kelly, Eleanor, Paulina, and Yolanda should not sing it together in unison. Winnie’s only has two mics. This is otherwise known as the ’sorority girl’ rule.
4) “I’m not drunk enough yet” is a valid excuse for not singing, as long as the situation is remedied real damned fast.
5) Overly-long instrumental breaks (over 8 bars) must be accompanied with some sort of dance (“goofy” preferred)
6) No pussying out on the ‘octave up’. If the song goes ‘octave up’, you gotta make a reasonable attempt. (examples: ‘Runaway’ by Bon Jovi, the Ike + Tina version of ‘Proud Mary’)
7) Anyone singing ‘Sweet Transvestite’ must use other people to fill in the Brad and Janet lines
I’ve got more but any more than that would be a bit snobby, eh? Then again what’s karaoke for other than for snickering at people who do it “wrong”.
* (Exceptions permitted for “Hand In My Pocket” by Alanis Morissette and “Brass In Pocket” by The Pretenders)
